  • Erin Carlstrom, Director of Education Programs, Feed The Children, Oklahoma City, Okla.
  • Dr. Robert Corbin, Vice President of Learning Experiences, Discovery Place, Charlotte, N.C.

When disasters strike, Feed The Children is frequently one of the first organizations to respond with much-needed food, water and relief supplies. In Charlotte, N.C., the Discovery Place is integrally involved in responding to a disaster of a different kind – disturbingly low student achievement. In this session, our speakers will explain the key role that collaboration plays in their successful efforts.

Luncheon and Keynote Speaker -

  • Rick Baker, Vice President for Economic Development and Director of Innovation Partnerships at the University of South Florida, former Mayor of St. Petersburg, Fla., and author, The Seamless City

During his two terms in office, Rick Baker worked toward a clear, uncompromising goal: to make St. Petersburg the best city in America. He led a downtown renaissance, rebuilt the most economically depressed area of the city, attracted businesses, worked to reduce violent crime, and made public schools a city priority − all with measurable results. His new book, The Seamless City, offers practical advice, based on his nine years of experience in City Hall, to show how every community can become dramatically better.

− Introduction: Mary Wong, President, Office Depot Foundation

Break

2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Panel Discussion - Best Practices in Non-Profit Collaboration

  • Katheryn Preston, Executive Director, Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness, Atlanta, Ga.
  • Lana Wachniak, Board Chair, Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness, Acworth, Ga.

The Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness, by definition, depends on effective collaboration to accomplish its important goals. Last year, GAEH launched the Georgia Campaign to End Child Homelessness – a call to action for Georgia’s political, social, advocacy, non-profit, business and philanthropic sectors to work collaboratively to address the plight of 41,500 homeless children.

Following the panel’s presentation, our moderators will lead an interactive exercise designed to inspire our participants to think outside the box – or even to get rid of the box altogether.

− Moderator: Mark Dobosz, Vice President of Development, SCORE, and President, SCORE Foundation, Herndon, Va.

After it was selected as the host city for the 2012 Super Bowl, community leaders decided to use the funds as the core of a multimillion revitalization project for the city’s downtrodden Near Eastside. Our speakers will share their stories of collaboration carried out with the backdrop of one of the world’s premier sporting events.

How to Communicate Your Initiatives to Inspire Trust — and Revenue

  • Joe Sibilia, CEO, CSRwire, Springfield, Mass.
  • Stephen Jordan, Executive Director, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center, Washington, D.C.

For decades, the nonprofit sector has talked about their causes – the impact, the urgency, the need. Never has our messaging focused on the intended audience: Why should they get involved, why care, how do their value systems align with ours?

So how do we flip the table and target our communications, whether they're press releases, blogs, grant letters or solicitation efforts?

Led by CSRwire CEO Joe Sibilia and BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan, this roundtable will discuss how to best communicate our initiatives in a way that inspires trust and revenue. Also on the agenda:  How can the nonprofit sector build capacity through peer learning? How can we better communicate what we're doing as a value proposition? And, where are we headed with social enterprise?

11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Concluding Session -

  • Mary Wong, President, Office Depot Foundation, Boca Raton, Fla.
  • Jay Hein, President, Sagamore Institute, Indianapolis, Ind.
  • Mark Dobosz, Vice President of Development, SCORE, and President, SCORE Foundation, Herndon, Va.
  • Stephen Jordan, Executive Director, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center, Washington, D.C.
